The Precocious Child
What set me on this path? After many years of my son being on an I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan) for speech he qualified for Mensa. So, we got in our car on a sunny summer day and headed to a park in a nearby city. Our small city had Mensa but it didn’t have a Gifted Youth Program. As we walked up, an assortment of children of all ages were playing chess and volleyball. The parents were chatting away and laughing. The group was small and the atmosphere was welcoming and casual. It felt like a school picnic for a Waldorf school.
I leaned into the discussion. This would be my first time hearing about Talent Search Programs, early testing, The Art of Problem Solving, CTY, CTD, Mensa Honor Society and much more. The midwest isn’t a hub of accelerated or gifted education. From closed districts to sports focused parenting, this isn’t the environment where a parent without an education degrees is going to know about fringe programs or special opportunities. Nor would I have known about early educational opportunities or what it takes to be involved in these programs.
There seems to be a misconception that only Tiger Moms are “pushing” academics. That “Kids should be Kids” and any parent guiding their children into programs and opportunities that are academic focused are pushing their child to be there. I mean, “What kid wants to do these things?” The implication is that no child would actually choose to do anything academically challenging. Will it might not be the choice for some, there are children who are inquisitive and precocious.
The main focus of my research has been to be bring opportunities to my boys that will allow them to explore the possibilities, open doors to their future and give them a real chance to understand what they love, distain, feel challenged by, feel passionate about and believe they might find true joy in doing as a life pursuit.

About Me
Hi, I’m ADRIA Lorene, founder of EDUSAVVY MAMA
I am a youth education volunteer, blogger, and content creator of EduSavvy Mama. After both my boys were diagnosed with speech delays I dove into understanding the world of education and their needs. As they grew out of their delays into gifted learning my focus shifted. However, I saw how a growth mindset was the key to approach both and to begin an exploration to find both my boys’ path.
Join me in this exploration to find the key to your child’s future.
